Brain ExerciseJust what is brain exercise? The word exercise comes from a Latin root meaning "to maintain, to keep, to ward off." These words have special meaning for those of us who want our brain to stay healthy and mentally sharp. God designed us to stay active into our 90s and beyond. We need to keep our bodies moving (especially our legs) or they will literally give out on us.
I'm often asked, "What is the best exercise?" The answer is, "The one that you will do." But read on to discover a wonderful brain exercise.
Physical activity (exercise) benefits the human body in countless ways, and the latest research shows that the brain is one of the primary beneficiaries. Frederick "Rusty" Gage and his team at the Salk Institute were the first to show, through their studies of mice, that new brain cells are created and aging ones "rescued" during "brain exercise." The brains of mice in one of these studies were plagued with a neurodegenerative disease similar to Alzheimer's. Carrolee Barlow, a Salk researcher said,
"When these mice were sedentary, it appears that most newly born brain cells died. Running on the wheel appears to 'rescue' many of these cells that would otherwise die."
"Mice don't really "run" on the "running wheels," Dr. Gage said, "It only looks like they do because the wheel provides so little resistance. Rather, they walk quickly."
Other studies show that people who walk regularly show significant improvement in memory skills, learning ability, reasoning, and concentration.
Stroke risk was cut by a whopping 57% in people who walked as little as 20 minutes a day.
"In the higher-energy groups, we saw up to 40% less cognitive decline," said Yaffe.
The best results come when you walk fast enough to increase breathing and heart rate, so that more oxygenated blood reaches the brain.
Other exercises that are excellent for the brain are dancing and table tennis, because they require coordination of the body and brain.
Currently, as Fitness Director of a continuing care facility in the San Joaquin Valley of California, I frequently work with residents who have dementia and early Alzheimer's disease. I thought I knew all the right exercise weight loss principles, but after trying Dr. Sears' PACEŽ program, it was soon apparent that there was more to learn. This program is
extremely effective and takes far less time than the
conventional programs which want you to spend hours in the
gym to achieve your goals. After a few weeks, your body gets the message that it
doesn't need to store excess body fat at all. Click this link to learn more about PACEŽ Brain Exercise and Weight Loss Program
