Change Your Brain With Brain Fitness Programs

"Why," you may ask "should you change your brain?

Other questions come to mind. "Can I change my brain. Why would I want to and how do I do it."

I'll try to give you some solid answers to each of these questions.

Contrary to popular myth—and also what some of my younger friends have suggested—most of us don’t lose a lot of brain cells as we get older. Experts tell us that there isn't that much difference between a healthy 75-year old brain and a 25-year old one.

This is especially comforting to me as my age recently passed the three-quarters-of-a-century mark.

And the news on how to revitalize your brain and have a sharper quicker memory gets even better.

New research shows that you can actually change your brain by adding gray matter (neurons) and white matter (synapses--connections between neurons) by doing only 30 minutes of cardio exercise each day.

Gray matter is involved in learning and memory and white matter is the myelin sheath containing the nerve fibers that transmit signals throughout the brain.

Professor Art Kramer, the lead researcher in the study, commented, “After only three months the people who exercised had the brain volumes of people three years younger.”

Kramer also stated that the exercisers had a better working memory, were nimbler at switching between mental tasks and were able to screen out distractions better than people who did not get exercise training.

A number of previous studies have shown that aerobic exercise, such as walking briskly or cycling, will change your brain and improve cognitive function, but this is the first time that the improvements were measured by taking MRI scans of the brain.

Other research shows that Alzheimers Symptoms can be reversed using brain fitness strategies.

Exercise programs that included both aerobic exercise and strength training produced better results on cognitive abilities than either one alone.

William Evans, Ph.D., researcher and author, says, “Aging is not a static irreversible biological condition of unwavering decrepitude.

Rather, it’s a dynamic state that, in most people, can be changed for the better no matter how many years they’ve lived or neglected their body in the past.”

In his book The Brain That Changes Itself, Norman Doidge, M.D., describes the remarkable brain “rewiring” pioneered by Dr. Merzenich and other brain scientists.

Memories have been dramatically improved, aging brains have been rejuvenated and the functions of stroke victims have been restored years after the event.

One of the best ways to Improve Your Memory is with Lumosity Brain Games. This is not the only "brain-training" site I've reviewed, but it is one of the most scientific. The games have been lab-tested and shown to improve memory, attention and processing speed.

Two of my favorites are Bird Watching and Monster Garden They are surprisingly fun, and I also like the feature of being able to track my progress.
